FINDING THE ORIENTAL BAY- OWL
(VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3) ISSN 2455 – 2135

A story that has given a better result at the end, it all started at the night, while having dinner, we heard the call of the Oriental Bay-owl right behind the bungalow. Leaving dinner on the table, taking the camera and a flashlight, we quickly followed the call. After all it can be only a matter of minutes to get the shot… “piece of cake”, I thought… but we were wrong… so wrong… and she was playing “hard to get” with us!!! Wearing only a T-shirt, short trousers, and slippers, we had to follow her deep into the Jungle, and through the undergrowth at night. While my friend was rushing ahead with the flashlight (he was the only one wearing strong shoes, and a long trouser), me and my wife were following slowly, and only equipped with our mobile phones as a light source… It was not long then, when I felt a painful sting in my foot for the first time… and then another, and yet another. Well, this was how we made acquaintance with Borneo’s “fire-ants” for the first time. Pretty unpleasant little creatures… Then my wife said that there is something on her leg… well, that was how we made acquaintance with the leeches of Borneo… also pretty unpleasant little creatures, and there were already 5 of them sucking on her leg. So, I don`t want to get too much into details here, but in the end it took us over 1 1/2 hours to get the well-deserved shot of the Oriental Bay-owl. We have been bitten several times by fire-ants, had leeches all over our legs, scratches all over the body, and our shirt was soaking wet from sweat…. but we got the shot, after all, and it was well worth it!
